Ethan Lemon creates large scale monochromatic portraits in public spaces using spray paint. His subjects are a mixture of well-known people and unknown people found whilst researching the history of his local area in South Manchester and his home town, Stoke on Trent. Ethan’s work is mainly inspired by women activists of the last few centuries and aims to raise awareness of these lesser known heroes. Being born and raised by a majority female family in Stoke on Trent, a former industrial giant in coal, pottery and steel, he finds many portraiture subjects from the archive of photos of this industrial era. Ethan likes to pay homage to the underrepresented women who were integral to these industries of our city's past. Ethan now resides in Manchester where he is equally inspired by the creatives and activists of the past. Since living in Manchester he has discovered how many influential historic women came from here and this has inspired him to tell the story of these people in his work.
